Amla (Sanskrit: Amalaki) is a very beautiful, medium-sized deciduous tree with a smooth trunk and pinnate leaves, belonging to the spurge family.
While it is also known locally as "Amalaki" or "Indian gooseberry," it is referred to botanically as "Phyllanthus emblica." Native to the tropical and subtropical regions of India, the tree bears pale yellow, spherical fruits that are considered an important staple in Ayurvedic teachings. Gentle drying and grinding ensure the preservation of its natural nutrients.
Along with Haritaki and Bibhitaki, Amalaki is a key component of the popular and effective herbal blend "Triphala." Amalaki is also the main ingredient in the popular Rasayana blend "Chyavanprash," which is therefore often sold in Europe as Amla jam.
Amalaki contains polyphenols, a group of secondary plant compounds known for their antioxidant properties.
