The marine red alga Lithothamnion (also known as Lithothamnium)is a special seaweed that, as it grows, absorbs naturally occurring minerals from seawater and incorporates them into its structure. This creates a natural mineral complex,which is particularly rich in calciumand also contains magnesium as well as other naturally occurring trace elements.
Due to its firm, branched, and calcareous structure, the Lithothamnion alga was once even mistaken for a coral. In fact, however, it is not a coral, but rather a calcifying red alga.

From the clear waters of Iceland:

Our Lithothamnion/Lithothamnium sp. comes from the Icelandic Sea. In the waters of northwest Iceland, the alga grows at a water depth of about 8-10 meters. During its growth phase, it absorbs minerals from the surrounding seawater and builds them into its natural structure.

After its natural growth ends, the calcified algal structures sink to the seabed. In the region around Bíldudalur in Iceland, these deposits are sustainably harvested and then gently dried.
Afterward, the raw material is carefully ground in Ireland into an especially fine, white powder. This results in our tasteless calcium alga, which can be easily integrated into everyday life.

Calcium in a natural algal matrix:

Our calcium alga naturally contains approx. 32% calcium. The calcium exists predominantly as calcium carbonateand is embedded in the natural mineral matrix of the alga.

A special feature of the calcified Lithothamnion structure is its fine-pored, honeycomb-like texture. As a result, the calcium has high bioavailability.
The fine powder is versatile and is suitable, for example, for smoothies, shakes, juices, desserts, as well as for cooking and baking.

Scientifically researched seaweed

Mineral-rich calcium algae from the genus Lithothamnionhave been scientifically investigated in various human and laboratory studies. The focus here included, among other things, bone metabolism, intestinal environment, intestinal barrier, and the musculoskeletal system.

In human studies, changes in certain markers of bone metabolismwere observed, among other findings. Further investigations dealt with the composition of the gut microbiome, metabolic products such as bile acids and short-chain fatty acids, as well as proteins related to the structure of the intestinal mucosa and intestinal barrier. The musculoskeletal system was also examined in smaller pilot studies.
